School Elective Programme
In recent years, the school has been running
a school-wide elective programme to
promote physical activity throughout the
school. This has proved to be a tremendous
success and we intend to offer a similar
programme in 2008. The programme takes
place in Term 3 when the weather is not
so reliable for outdoor sporting activities.
Subsequently, many of the activities are held
indoors and off site.
The programme runs for six weeks and
students are involved in one activity for
this period. We are always eager to try new
options as we find the elective programme
adds a special dimension to our school
environment.
Sample activities include:
- Aerobics
- Rock Climbing
- Badminton
- Rotation Games
- Dance
- Squash
- Golf
- Table Tennis
- Ice Skating
- Ten Pin Bowling
- Indoor Soccer
- Unihoc
- Indoor Cricket
- Water Polo
- Pilates
Peer Mediators
A number of Year 8 students are elected
each year and trained as Peer Mediators.
Mediators assist their peers in resolving
minor playground conflicts.
We often find that when students openly
discuss and manage each other’s behaviour
the results are positive and lasting.
This programme has been running for two
years at ANI and is proving to be a very
successful way of maintaining good student
relations. It also reduces the number of
incidents of playground bullying.
Anti-Bullying Strategies
The school has a policy of zero tolerance to bullying. If, on occasions, students feel bullied there are a number of ways they can access support:
- Students may tell their teacher, or year dean, or use peer mediation
- Students may access any member of the Senior Leadership Team directly through “e-bullying” – an electronic and confidential message service on our intranet.
- Students may inform their parents who in turn may call the class teacher, year dean or principal. The most important things for students to remember – DO NOT tolerate bullying. Tell someone.
Note: Bullying is defined as the repeated intimidation of others by real or threatened infliction of physical, verbal, written, electronically transmitted or emotional abuse, or through attacks on property of another. It may include, but not be limited to, actions such as verbal taunts, name calling and put downs, including ethnically based or gender-based verbal put downs, and extortion of money or possessions.
