ANI Specialist Science

Specialist Science at ANI incorporates the Material World and Physical World strands.  As part of their specialist programme, students attend Science for two 90 minute sessions per week, for a 6 week block.

All specialist Science programmes integrate the Nature of Science strand, focusing on communicating scientific ideas with vocabulary and models, and the development of investigative skills – predicting, planning a systematic investigation, recording results and drawing conclusions from data.  Students are also required to complete homework tasks as part of the programme.

I am a UK-trained teacher and I taught Science for two years to students in years 7 to 11 in the UK before moving to New Zealand.  This is my fifth year at ANI.

For information about current programmes, please click here for the Science blog.

Science and Technology Fair

Each year at Auckland Normal Intermediate we hold a Science and Technology fair.  The fair gives all students the opportunity to carry out an independent Science investigation or Technology project on a topic of their own choice.

The Science and Technology Fair is compulsory for all students.  There are two levels of entry:

  1. Competitive – student may work alone or with a partner
  2. Exhibition – student may work in a group of up to 3 people

Projects that are entered into the competitive category must show clear use of the scientific method or technological process.  Students can obtain information on these processes from school.  They must also have a high standard of presentation.

The winners of our school Science and Technology Fair go on to represent ANI at the Auckland Regional Science and Technology Fair, held in October.

It is important that students carry out their projects safely.  Any projects that involve people, animals or growing micro-organisms (mould or bacteria), including questionnaires, experiments and observations, require ethics or safety approval.  If your child’s project involves any of these, please support us by checking that they have seen Miss Bass about this.

If you would like further information, please see the Specialist Science blog, email lyndseyb@ak-normal.school.nz, or telephone Lyndsey Bass on 09 630 1109.
