Fabric and Food Technology
Page

As part of the specialist cycle all Yr 8 students attend Food Technology and Yr 7 students attend Fabric Technology. Over the six week cycle, students attend two 90 minute sessions per week.
Food Technology
Students learn the process of developing a food product with the opportunity of adapting an existing recipe to meet the requirements of a given brief. Students gain an understanding about the importance of personal hygiene, the safe handling and storing of food and what constitutes a healthy and balanced diet. Over the course of the Food Technology cycle, students will explore food from an international perspective; discovering how food is prepared and served in a variety of cultures.
Fabric Technology
Over the six week cycle in fabric technology, students gain an understanding of fibres and fabrics, their origins and uses. Students learn to develop a textile product from the initial stages of writing a brief, researching and designing their individual product through to the planning and construction of the final outcome. There is a strong emphasis on personal expression. Fabric Technology is a practical based course and one of the major challenges for most students in constructing a textile product is learning to use a sewing machine, however, although not everyone can master this over twelve lessons, the majority of students seem to enjoy trying!
The three strands of the new technology curriculum; Technological Practice, Technological Knowledge and the Nature of Technology are incorporated during the 6 week cycle.
This is my third year as the Food Technology specialist teacher at ANI following one year teaching Year 9 – 13 students at secondary level.
